All hive components are constructed of top quality Cypress Wood. Cypress is known for its natural ability to resist rot, mold, and insect damage. The bees love Cypress as a natural wood. We use only Cypress for all of our hive components because we know that it is safe for your bees, and it will last longer than any other natural wood hive material.
We have customized our Medium Super construction by adding a recess on all four sides of the Super. This means that they can be used as Standard Langstroth Hives with standard frame sizes. In this configuration the hive will accommodate 10 Langstroth Frames. However, with the additional recess, they can also be used with British Standard Short Lug Smith Frames. This means that you can set your Smith frames the short way across the hive. The hive will thus accommodate 15 Smith Style Short Lug frames.
Curved hand holds have been cut on all four sides of the hive body. They are cut with a 15 degree recess to ensure that you can get a good solid grip on the hive. Proper hand holds are critical to the safety and security of both bees and beekeeper. If you have ever dropped a hive because you couldn't get a good grip, this was surely an experience that you will not forget!
All metal components of the hive (nails, screws, and screen) are galvanized to withstand the elements and resist corrosion.
All hive components are treated with a 100% Organic finish. Cypress is durable enough to withstand the weather on its own, however we add an extra layer of protection to further enhance the longevity of these wood hives. We have developed our own blend of Flax Seed Oil and Beeswax that gives a long lasting protective finish to our hive components. The finish is all organic so it will not harm your bees, and will keep the honey you produce in-line with the USDA Certified Organic Standards.
